Short answer
An appliance needs immediate repair when it smells of burning, is actively leaking, sparks or trips the breaker, when the fridge has been warm for more than about four hours, or when a new noise keeps getting louder. Stop using it, unplug it if there is any electrical concern, and book a repair today. For a gas smell, leave the home and call Enbridge Gas (Ontario), Gazifère (Gatineau area) or Énergir (elsewhere in Quebec) from outside.

Sign 1: a burning smell from any appliance
Not every appliance problem is an emergency. A sticking drawer or a flickering fridge light can wait a few days without major consequences. Other problems are genuinely urgent: ignore them and a small repair becomes a large one, a slow drip becomes water damage, or a safety hazard develops in your home. This guide covers the warning signs Ottawa homeowners should never ignore, the ones that call for a repair today rather than next week.
A burning smell is one of the clearest of those signs. It almost always means something is overheating or has an electrical fault, and both can escalate quickly.
Burning smell from a dryer
A dryer that smells of burning is genuinely dangerous. The most common cause is lint built up in the vent or inside the cabinet. A dryer works by moving hot air through your clothes; if that air can’t exhaust properly, heat builds up inside, and lint is extremely flammable. Clothes dryers are a well-known cause of house fires, and a lint-clogged vent is the most common factor.
Stop using the dryer as soon as you smell burning. Don’t run another cycle “to see if it goes away.” Have the vent inspected and the dryer serviced before the next load. Other causes include a worn drum bearing (the friction generates heat), a failing motor or a wiring fault, and every one of them should be checked before the dryer runs again.
Burning smell from a stove or oven
Some smell is normal during an oven’s first few uses or when a spill burns off. A persistent burning smell with no visible food residue inside points to a failing bake element, a wiring problem or, in a gas oven, a partial blockage or ignition fault. Have it diagnosed promptly.
Gas smell? If you smell gas near the stove while it is off, that is a different level of urgency. Leave the home, don’t touch light switches or use your phone while inside, and call the gas utility’s emergency line from outside: Enbridge Gas in Ontario, Gazifère (Gatineau area) or Énergir elsewhere in Quebec. A gas leak needs the utility first, not just an appliance repair call.
Burning smell from a washer
A washing machine that smells of burning usually has a motor problem or a drive belt that is slipping and overheating. Stop using it. Running a washer with an overheating motor speeds up the damage and raises the repair cost significantly.
Burning smell from a refrigerator
This is less common, but more alarming when it happens. It usually means a wiring fault, an overheating compressor or a defrost heater that has failed in a hazardous way. Unplug the fridge and book service.

Sign 2: water actively leaking from an appliance
Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Beyond the immediate safety concern, an active leak has a second kind of urgency: water damage. Even a small, slow leak that you notice on a Monday and plan to “deal with this weekend” can seep under the flooring and into the subfloor, and mould can start to grow within 24–48 hours.
Ottawa’s older homes, particularly in Centretown, the Glebe and Sandy Hill, often have hardwood floors and older subfloors that absorb water quickly and are expensive to repair. A $200 washer repair can become a $3,000+ flooring replacement if a slow leak is left for two weeks.
Washing machine leaks
A front-load washer leaking from the door during the wash is usually the door boot seal, the rubber gasket that seals the drum opening. It is one of the most common front-load repairs and completely fixable. Door boots tend to tear when small items such as underwire bras or coins get caught between the seal and the drum.
A leak from the bottom of the washer can be the drain hose, the pump or, at worst, a cracked tub. Don’t run another load: find where the water is coming from and leave the machine off until it is repaired. Our guide to a washer leaking in Ottawa walks through each source.
Refrigerator leaks
Water pooling under or inside the fridge is often a blocked defrost drain, the tube that carries melt water to the drain pan underneath. When that drain freezes or clogs, water overflows into the fridge and eventually onto the floor. It is common and fixable, but it needs attention before the water damages your flooring. Water near the ice maker line usually points to the water inlet valve or the ice maker connection, both straightforward repairs. See fridge leaking water.
Dishwasher leaks
A dishwasher that leaks during a cycle is particularly risky on hardwood or laminate kitchen floors, which warp or swell very quickly. The usual culprits are the door gasket, the float switch (which controls the water level) or the wash pump seal. All are fixable, but they need same-day attention if your floor is at risk. More in our dishwasher leaking guide.

Sign 3: sparks, tripped breakers or flickering lights
Any time an appliance causes an electrical event in your home (tripping a circuit breaker, flickering the lights or, above all, producing visible sparks) it needs immediate attention. These are signs of electrical faults that can become fire risks.
Sparks inside a microwave
Sparking inside a running microwave is one of the most alarming sights in a kitchen. It almost always points to a damaged or dirty waveguide cover (the flat panel inside the cooking cavity), arcing at the magnetron, or metal residue inside the cavity. Stop using the microwave right away: continued sparking can crack the magnetron and cause far more extensive damage.
If the waveguide cover is simply coated with grease or food splatter, cleaning can sometimes solve it. If the cover is cracked or burnt, it needs replacing. If the sparking continues with a clean interior, the magnetron or diode is failing. See microwave repair.
A washer or dryer that trips the breaker
An appliance that keeps tripping its breaker is drawing more current than it should, usually because a motor is seizing, a heating element has partly shorted or the control board has an electrical fault. Don’t keep resetting the breaker and running the machine. Every cycle with an electrical fault risks worse damage and a genuine electrical hazard.
Sparks when plugging in
A tiny, brief spark at the plug is usually harmless. A large, visible arc, or a spark that comes with a pop or a burning smell, needs professional attention to both the appliance and possibly the outlet itself.

Sign 4: the fridge has been warm for more than 4 hours
A refrigerator that stops cooling is time-sensitive for a reason you probably already know: food safety. Food-safety guidance is clear that perishable food kept above 4 °C (40 °F) for more than 2 hours should be thrown out.
If your fridge feels warm inside, act quickly:
- Keep the door closed as much as possible to hold the cold air that remains.
- Move high-priority perishables (meat, dairy, medications) into a cooler with ice right away.
- Check the obvious: is it plugged in, is the breaker on, is the temperature control at the right setting? These get missed more often than you’d think.
- Book a repair as soon as possible, the same day if the schedule allows.
A fridge that runs (you can hear the compressor) but stays warm, with frost building up on the back panel of the freezer, often has a failed defrost heater. If there is no frost at all, a stopped evaporator fan or a sealed-system fault is more likely. A fridge that is completely silent has probably lost power, has a failed start relay on the compressor, or has a seized compressor. Our guide to a fridge not cooling in Ottawa explains each cause.
For Ottawa households, the season matters: in summer, with indoor temperatures of 25 °C or more, a fridge that stops cooling reaches unsafe food temperatures faster than it would in winter.

Sign 5: a noise that keeps getting worse
Appliances make sounds, and that is normal. But a sound that developed recently and is getting louder or more frequent is a warning of mechanical failure in progress. The key word is progressive: a sound that started last week and is noticeably worse this week is escalating.
Front-load washer: rumbling or grinding on spin
A front-loader that sounds like a jet engine on the spin cycle has failing drum bearings. The sound starts as a subtle rumble and builds to a loud roar. Eventually the bearings fail completely, and the drum can damage the spider arm (the support that holds the drum). Caught early, the repair is more straightforward and less expensive. See washer making noise.
Dryer: squealing or thumping
A squealing dryer almost always has a worn drum support roller or a failing drum bearing. A rhythmic thump is often a worn drum glide or a slapping belt. These sounds get worse over time and end in complete failure, often with the drum seizing. Fix them early and the repair is simple; ignore them long enough and the motor may need replacing as well. See dryer making noise.
Refrigerator: repeated clicking at start-up
A fridge that clicks repeatedly as it tries to start, or several times before the compressor kicks in, usually has a failing start relay. This small part, typically $40–$80, helps the compressor motor start. As it fails, the compressor tries to start, fails and tries again, and each attempt is a click. Left alone, those repeated failed starts can damage the compressor and turn a cheap repair into an expensive one. See fridge making noise.
Dishwasher: grinding during the wash
A grinding dishwasher usually points to the wash pump: something caught in the impeller (broken glass and hard food debris are common culprits) or a failing pump bearing. Stop using it and have it inspected. Running it with debris in the pump can damage the impeller blades and turn a simple clearing job into a full pump replacement.
06Can wait
Problems that can usually wait a few days
For balance, here are issues that are annoying but rarely need same-day service:
- Fridge interior light out: book at your convenience; it doesn’t affect cooling.
- Dishwasher not fully drying: often a rinse-aid issue or a heating element starting to weaken; annoying, not urgent. See dishwasher not drying.
- Gas burner with a smaller flame: usually a clogged burner port; manageable for a few days until your appointment, as long as there is no gas smell.
- Washer taking longer than usual: often a partly blocked pump filter or worn bearings; schedule service, but it is not an emergency.
- Ice maker slowing down: usually low water pressure or a clogged filter; schedule it, but it isn’t urgent.
07Act now
What to do when an appliance needs immediate repair
If any of the five warning signs applies to you right now, work through this checklist:
- Stop using the appliance. Running a machine with an active fault almost always makes things worse.
- Unplug it if there is any electrical concern (sparking, a burning smell, a tripping breaker), but only if the plug and the floor around it are dry and you can reach it safely.
- Deal with the immediate consequences: move food out of a warm fridge, put towels down and close the water supply valve for a leak, and open windows for a burning smell.
- Book a repair. Send a request online any time or call us. Same-day visits across Ottawa and Gatineau are available when the schedule allows.
Urgent repairs don’t get cheaper with time. A simple drain pump replacement becomes more complicated, and more expensive, if you keep running the washer and burn out the motor too. The sooner you deal with the problem, the more options you have.

Booking an urgent repair with B&M Canada
Breakdowns don’t pick convenient times. A fridge that stops cooling with a full week of groceries inside is genuinely stressful, and a washer that floods the laundry room at 8 p.m. is not a “book for next week” situation.
In business since 1995, B&M Canada Appliances repairs appliances across Ottawa and Gatineau. Our service hours are 7 AM to 9 PM, and visits between 9 PM and 7 AM add a $100 flat after-hours fee. A request sent online is not yet an appointment: we call or text to confirm a time window of about three hours. Tell us the make, model and symptom when you book so we can plan the visit.
The residential diagnostic is $89 + tax and is applied toward the approved repair; gas appliances are $129 + tax, and a sealed-system (refrigerant or compressor) diagnostic is $159 + tax. You get a written quote before any work begins and a written diagnostic report after the visit, and repairs carry a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.
