Standing Water Is More Than Annoying — It’s a Clock
Two inches of murky water sitting in the bottom of your dishwasher after every cycle. Food particles floating in the sump. A smell that’s getting worse every day. When a dishwasher stops draining, the problem compounds — trapped water breeds bacteria, warps the door gasket, and can eventually leak onto the floor.
Our Ottawa technicians arrive with the common drainage parts on the truck: drain pumps, check valves, solenoids, drain hoses, and sump assemblies for all major brands. We also know the difference between a dishwasher problem and a plumbing problem — we’ll tell you honestly which one you’ve got before charging for parts you don’t need.
Why Your Dishwasher Won’t Drain — 8 Common Causes
1. Clogged Filter / Sump
The #1 cause on Bosch, Miele, and modern Whirlpool dishwashers. Food debris, bones, broken glass, or labels clog the fine filter at the bottom. Quick clean, water drains again.
2. Blocked Drain Hose
The hose from the dishwasher to the sink drain or garbage disposal gets a kink or a buildup inside. Sometimes a starter fix — sometimes a full hose replacement. Codes: E24, E25, LE, 5C, OE.
3. Plugged Air Gap or High Loop
The chrome cylinder next to your faucet (or the high-loop hose under the sink) prevents drain-water backflow. Debris plugs it and the dishwasher can’t push water out. 10-minute fix.
4. Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug
Brand-new disposal install? The knockout plug inside the disposal drain inlet needs to be removed. If the installer left it in, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain. Common call after a reno.
5. Failed Drain Pump
The pump motor wears out or the impeller seizes on debris. You’ll hear a hum or nothing at all during the drain portion of the cycle. We test voltage and replace the pump as needed.
6. Broken Check Valve / Flapper
The one-way valve at the pump outlet stops dirty water flowing back into the tub. When it sticks open, the water you just pumped out drains back in. Tell-tale sign: water appears after cycle ends.
7. Drain Solenoid Failure
On some Whirlpool / KitchenAid / Kenmore models, a solenoid diverts the pump between wash and drain. Solenoid fails, pump runs but water just recirculates. We carry the common part numbers.
8. Control Board Not Sending Drain Signal
Main board never tells the pump to run. Voltage test confirms. Board replacement or reflash, depending on model. We do the diagnosis before quoting the board.

Common Dishwasher Drain Codes (Ottawa Service Calls)
These are the drain-related codes our Ottawa techs see most often — roughly what they point to before a proper test:
- Bosch — E24 / E25 / E22: Drain blocked / pump blocked / filter restriction.
- Samsung — 5C / OC / LC: Drain / overflow / leak sensor.
- LG — OE / AE / LE: Drain error / leak / motor error.
- Whirlpool / KitchenAid — F2 / Clean light flash: Drain fault.
- Maytag / Kenmore — 6-1 / 6-4 / 8-1: Drain / drain pump / no drain detected.
- GE / Hotpoint — C1 / C2: Drain pump / overflow.
- Miele — F11 / F12 / F13: Drain / water intake / heater.
- Frigidaire — i20 / i30: Clogged filter / leak detected.
Codes narrow it down — they don’t replace a proper test. We bring the diagnostic gear.
Before You Call — 3 Things to Check
We’d rather tell you how to save $89 than take your money for a five-minute fix. Check these first:
- Clean the filter. Twist out the round filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under the sink, re-seat it. Common fix on Bosch, Miele, Samsung and modern Whirlpool.
- Run the garbage disposal. If the disposal has food backed up in it, the dishwasher can’t drain into it. Run disposal for 30 seconds, try the dishwasher again.
- Check the air gap. The chrome cylinder by your faucet — pop the top off and look for debris. A plugged air gap stops drainage completely.
If the water’s still there after those three — that’s when to call us.

Dishwasher Not Draining — FAQ
How much does a dishwasher repair cost in Ottawa?
Most dishwasher drainage repairs in Ottawa run $180–$480 including parts and labour. Filter / hose / check-valve jobs are at the lower end; drain pumps and control boards are higher. The $89 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve.
Can you come today for a dishwasher that won’t drain in Ottawa?
Usually yes. Same-day dishwasher repair is a priority call for us. Phone 613-301-0016 before 2 PM for best same-day availability in Ottawa, Gatineau, and the surrounding suburbs.
Water comes back after the cycle ends — why?
That’s almost always a failed check valve at the drain pump outlet, or a missing high loop / air gap on the drain hose under the sink. Dirty sink water siphons back in. Simple part or simple plumbing re-route.
My dishwasher is brand new and won’t drain — what happened?
If a new garbage disposal was installed at the same time, it’s almost always a forgotten knockout plug inside the disposal drain inlet. 10-minute fix. We’ve lost count of how many of these we’ve done in Ottawa.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old dishwasher?
Depends on the brand and the fault. A drain pump on a 10-year-old Bosch or KitchenAid? Fix it — you’ll get many more years. A control board on a 10-year-old budget model? We’ll give you the honest call.
Is the problem my dishwasher or my plumbing?
We can tell on the first visit. If the dishwasher pumps strong flow into a disconnected hose, it’s a plumbing clog. If the pump is weak or silent, it’s the dishwasher. Either way you get a straight answer before any parts are ordered.
Do you warranty the repair?
Every repair comes with a written parts-and-labour warranty. If the same fault returns inside the window, we come back at no charge.
