A residential hood diagnosis costs $89 + tax. The technician tests the fan at each speed, the switches or touch controls, the lights and the power supply to the hood, and checks the blower wheel and filters for grease load. You get a written quote, the $89 is applied toward the repair if you go ahead, and a written diagnostic report follows the visit.

Commercial service calls are $129 + tax. A visit after 9 PM or before 7 AM adds a $100 flat after-hours fee, and homes more than 30 km out from downtown Ottawa may pay a travel charge. Repairs carry a 3-month warranty on parts and labour.

The failed part comes first: a capacitor or switch costs far less than a blower motor or control board. Then the hood type: under-cabinet hoods are usually quick to service, while built-in inserts, wall-mount chimney hoods, island hoods and downdraft units take more labour to open and reach. For a hood under roughly 10 years old, a repair that costs less than about half of a comparable new unit is usually the better buy. Replacement makes more sense only when an older unit needs a costly motor-and-board combination and is showing other wear.

1. Clean or replace the filters regularly. Most metal mesh and baffle filters can be washed in the dishwasher (check the manual); charcoal filters on recirculating hoods are replaced, not washed. Clogged filters make the motor work harder and run hotter.
2. Run the fan for a few minutes after cooking. It clears moisture and grease that would otherwise settle on the blower wheel.
3. Listen for change. A new rattle or a fan that is slow to start is often a capacitor or a loose blower wheel, both modest repairs if caught before the motor fails.
4. Check the damper and the outside vent. A stuck exterior flap makes a working fan seem weak, and it is not a hood fault.
