Short answer
A range hood light that is not working most often has a burned-out bulb, a socket worn by heat and grease, or a failed light switch. On electronic hoods, a control board fault can also cut the lights. Switch the hood off, let the bulb cool and replace it with the correct type. If a new bulb still doesn’t light, the socket, switch or wiring needs testing.

Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Correct bulbMatch the old bulb’s base, wattage and type (halogen, LED or appliance incandescent); the wrong bulb may not light or may overheat the socket.
- Power off firstSwitch the hood off, or the breaker if the switch is unreliable, and let a halogen bulb cool before touching it.
- Does the fan run?If the fan works but the light doesn’t, power reaches the hood and the fault is in the bulb, socket, switch or light circuit.
- Light settingsSome hoods have a dim or night-light mode on a separate button. Cycle through the light settings before assuming a fault.
Stop using it if you notice
- Scorched, melted or discoloured socket
- Flickering with buzzing or a burning smell
- New bulbs burning out within days
- The breaker trips when the light is switched on

02Why it’s dark
Common causes of a range hood light that is not working
- Burned-out bulb. The simplest cause: the bulb has failed and needs the correct replacement type.
- Worn or corroded socket. Heat and grease degrade the light socket until the bulb loses contact.
- Faulty light switch. A worn light switch on the hood stops power reaching the bulb.
- Wiring or connector fault. Loose or burnt connections from heat and grease interrupt the light circuit.
- Failed control board. On electronic hoods, a board fault can disable the lighting.

04LED and halogen
When the light is an LED panel, not a bulb
