Range hood fan not working in Ottawa?

When the range hood fan stops, grease, smoke, steam and cooking odours have nowhere to go, and moisture starts building up in the kitchen. A fan that won’t run is almost always an electrical or mechanical fault in the blower assembly, which makes it a focused repair that is often finished in one visit. These are the causes our technicians find most often in Ottawa kitchens.

1. Failed blower motor

The blower motor drives the fan. When it burns out, the fan goes dead on every speed even though the light may still work. A motor on its way out can also run hot, get noisy, or cut out after a few minutes once it overheats.

2. Weak or failed motor capacitor

Many range hood motors use a start/run capacitor. When it weakens, you’ll often hear the motor hum but the fan won’t start spinning, or it starts only some of the time. A failed capacitor is a common, affordable fix that restores full fan power.

3. Faulty speed switch or control board

A worn rocker or rotary speed switch, or a failed electronic control board, can cut power to the fan or leave it stuck on a single speed. 4. Jammed or grease-clogged blower wheel

Years of grease can stiffen the blower wheel and bearings until the fan struggles or stalls, and a dislodged wheel can jam against the housing. Heavy grease buildup also strains the motor and reduces airflow even when the fan does spin. Cleaning, re-seating or replacing the blower wheel restores proper suction.

A working range hood does more than clear odours. Wash metal grease filters every one to three months, more often if you fry a lot, and replace charcoal filters on recirculating hoods as the manual recommends. Clogged filters force the motor to work harder and let grease reach the blower wheel. Run the fan on a lower speed for a few minutes after cooking to clear lingering moisture rather than always running it on high. If the motor hums without spinning, suction weakens or the fan cuts out when it warms up, book early: a capacitor or a blower cleaning costs far less than a new motor.
