Seasonal checks

• Winter: keep the outside dryer vent hood clear of snow and ice, and don’t let a washer hose or ice-maker supply line run through an unheated mudroom or garage where it can freeze.
• Summer: vacuum the fridge’s condenser coil before the hot months, and check that a full chest freezer’s lid still seals all the way round.
• Any time: if your well pump or pressure tank has been serviced, run a cold tap for a few minutes before using the dishwasher or washer, so loosened sediment doesn’t go straight into the inlet valves.

Rinse aid also helps a lot with hard water: it reduces spotting and helps dishes dry, and an empty dispenser is a common reason for wet, cloudy glasses that has nothing to do with a faulty part.

• Washers: slow fills from clogged inlet screens, drain-pump blockages, door locks, worn bearings and leaks at the door boot.
• Dryers: no heat, long drying times, squealing rollers and belts, electric and gas.
• Stoves and ovens: elements, igniters, temperature sensors, self-clean locks and controls; gas ranges by TSSA-certified technicians for a $129 + tax diagnostic.
• Dishwashers: scale-clogged spray arms, poor drying, drain faults and leaks.
• Range hoods and microwaves: fans, lights, switches, magnetrons and door switches.

Requests can be sent online at any time.
