Short answer
A microwave that won’t turn on at all, with no display and no response, usually has a blown internal line fuse (often caused by a failing door interlock switch), a tripped thermal fuse or a failed control board. Check the outlet, breaker and any GFCI first. If there is power at the outlet and the microwave is still dead, book a repair: the fuses sit next to high-voltage parts.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- OutletPlug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet. Over-the-range models plug into an outlet in the cabinet above, so check their breaker.
- Breaker and GFCILook for a tripped breaker, and press the reset button on any GFCI outlet on the same kitchen circuit.
- Control lockIf the display is lit but no button responds, the child or control lock may be on; the manual gives the unlock sequence.
- ResetUnplug it for a few minutes, or switch the breaker off and on, to reset the control board after a power surge.
Stop using it if you notice
- It went dead with a pop or a flash
- A smell of burnt plastic before it stopped
- The breaker trips again as soon as it is plugged in
- A damaged cord or scorched plug
Leave it unplugged and book a repair; don’t replace the internal fuse yourself, as the high-voltage capacitor beside it can hold a lethal charge. Then call 613-301-0016.
02Why it’s dead
Common causes of a microwave that will not turn on
- Blown line fuse. A blown internal fuse, often after a door-switch fault, leaves the microwave completely dead.
- Failed door interlock switch. A faulty door switch can blow the fuse and stop the microwave from powering on.
- No power at the outlet. A tripped breaker, GFCI or bad outlet leaves it without power.
- Failed control board or touchpad. A dead board or unresponsive touchpad stops it from turning on.
- Tripped thermal fuse. An overheat thermal fuse can cut power until it is replaced, often after the unit has run hot.
03Safe repair
How we bring a dead microwave back
We discharge the high-voltage capacitor safely, then test the line fuse, door switches, thermal fuse and control board to find why it is dead and replace the faulty part. A blown fuse is rarely the whole story, so the door switches are checked too; replacing only the fuse often means it blows again. The quote is in writing before work starts.
Since 1995, B&M has repaired kitchen appliances across Ottawa and Gatineau; repairs are factory-authorized, and the company is TSSA-certified for gas work in Ontario.
04Worth it?
Repairing over-the-range and built-in microwaves
For over-the-range and built-in models, a fuse and door-switch repair is far cheaper than replacing the unit, its mounting plate and trim. More on our microwave repair page; if it powers on but won’t warm food, see microwave not heating.

Also serving
Why is my microwave completely dead?
Most often a blown internal fuse, frequently caused by a failing door switch. Both are common repairs our technicians handle safely.
Is it worth repairing?
Usually, if it is an over-the-range or built-in model. On a basic countertop microwave, the technician will say so if a new one makes more sense.
Can I replace the fuse myself?
We don’t recommend opening a microwave: it can keep a lethal high-voltage charge long after it is unplugged. A technician discharges the capacitor before touching anything.
