A microwave that runs and lights up but will not heat your food almost always has a failed magnetron, diode, or high-voltage part — a defined, fixable fault. B&M offers same-day microwave repair across Ottawa & Gatineau, TSSA-certified and factory-authorized since 1995.

Common causes of a microwave that runs but will not heat
- Failed magnetron. The component that produces the microwaves burns out — the most common reason a microwave runs but will not heat.
- Faulty high-voltage diode. A shorted diode stops the magnetron from getting the voltage it needs.
- Failed high-voltage capacitor. A bad capacitor interrupts the high-voltage circuit and holds a dangerous charge.
- Door interlock switch fault. A failed door switch can let the unit run without powering the magnetron.
- Tripped thermal fuse or control board. A blown fuse or faulty board can stop heating while the display still works.
How B&M fixes it
We safely discharge the high-voltage capacitor, then test the magnetron, diode, capacitor, and door switches to find the fault and replace it. Microwaves hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so this is not a safe DIY repair — our technicians service it safely and confirm it heats before leaving.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing a microwave that will not heat?
For over-the-range and built-in models, usually yes — a magnetron or diode repair is far cheaper than replacing a built-in unit. For cheap countertop models we will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
Why does my microwave run but not heat?
Almost always a failed magnetron or high-voltage diode. Both are defined parts we can test and replace.
Can I fix a microwave myself?
We do not recommend it — microwaves store a lethal high-voltage charge in the capacitor even when unplugged. Our technicians discharge and repair it safely.
