Short answer
A microwave turntable not turning is usually down to a failed turntable motor, a worn or cracked drive coupler, or debris or a misplaced roller ring in the track. Check that the plate and roller ring are seated and clean, and that the turntable button isn’t switched off. If the plate still won’t turn, the motor or coupler needs replacing, which is a small, affordable repair.
01Before you book
Safe checks first
Five minutes that sometimes save a visit, and always make it faster. Skip anything you are not comfortable doing.
- Seat the plateLift out the glass tray and roller ring, then set them back so the notches under the tray sit over the coupler in the centre.
- Clean the trackWash the roller ring and wipe the cavity floor; dried food or a crumb under a wheel can stop the tray.
- Turntable on/off keyMany over-the-range models have a Turntable button that stops rotation for large dishes. Press it and try again.
- Dish sizeA dish that touches the side walls or is too heavy for the tray will stall it.
Stop using it if you notice
- Sparks or arcing inside the cavity
- Grinding or a burning smell from under the floor
- A cracked glass tray (don’t use it until replaced)

02Likely causes
Common causes of a microwave turntable that will not turn
- Failed turntable motor. The small motor under the floor of the microwave burns out and stops driving the plate.
- Worn drive coupler or hub. The plastic coupler that turns the tray wears out or cracks, so the plate slips.
- Debris in the roller track. Food or a misplaced roller guide stops the tray from turning smoothly.
- Cracked or warped tray support. A damaged roller ring or support prevents the plate from rotating.
- Control or switch fault. Less commonly, a control board or switch fault stops power reaching the turntable motor.
03The fix
How we get the plate turning again
We confirm the plate, roller ring and coupler are seated, then test the turntable motor and replace it or the coupler so the tray turns reliably. These are inexpensive parts and the job is usually quick; the capacitor is discharged first because the motor is reached from inside the cabinet. The price is confirmed in writing before any work.

04Keep using it?
Uneven heating while the plate is stuck
The microwave still heats with the plate stopped, but food cooks unevenly, with cold centres and hot spots, which matters when reheating meat and leftovers.
