No heat at all
Before you call, check the three things that account for a surprising share of no-heat calls: the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch and gets flipped by accident), the breaker, and the thermostat batteries. If those are fine, the usual suspects are a failed igniter, a dirty flame sensor, a tripped limit switch from a clogged filter, or a control board fault. A flame sensor clean is often a same-visit fix; a cracked control board is a part order.
Short cycling — it starts, then shuts down after a few minutes

Short cycling wastes fuel and wears the ignition system, so it is worth fixing early rather than living with it.
The blower runs but the air is cold
Air moving with no heat in it usually means ignition is failing while the fan still runs, or the thermostat is set to “fan on” rather than “auto.” If the burner is lighting and then dropping out, the flame sensor or gas valve is the place to look.
Loud bangs, squeals or rumbles
A bang on start-up — delayed ignition — means gas is pooling before it lights, and it should be looked at promptly rather than tolerated. Squealing usually points to blower motor bearings or a belt. A rumble that continues after the burner shuts off can indicate a burner or heat exchanger problem, which is one of the faults where we will recommend shutting the system down until it is inspected.
Thermostat problems
Smart thermostats retrofitted onto older furnaces are a recurring source of “the furnace is broken” calls that turn out to be wiring — most commonly a missing C-wire being worked around badly. We will tell you if the fault is the thermostat rather than the furnace instead of billing you for a furnace repair you did not need.
Electric furnace and air-handler faults
Electric systems fail differently: burnt sequencers, failed heating elements, blower motor faults, and tripping breakers. Diagnosis is more straightforward but the electrical work still has to be done properly. Electric furnace diagnostics are billed at the standard $89 + tax residential rate.
Carbon Monoxide — Take This One Seriously
