Fridge Freezing Up or Ice Build-Up in Ottawa? Here’s the Complete Fix
Ice building up inside your refrigerator — on the back wall, on the floor of the fridge, around the evaporator, or blocking the vents — is one of the most common refrigerator problems Ottawa homeowners face. It can cause the fridge to stop cooling, block airflow, and ultimately lead to food spoilage. This guide covers every cause of ice build-up in a refrigerator and exactly what the repair involves. B&M Canada Appliances provides expert fridge repair across Ottawa and Gatineau. Call (613) 301-0016.
Types of Ice Build-Up in a Fridge — and What They Mean
Before diagnosing the cause, it helps to identify exactly where and how the ice is forming. Different patterns point to different root causes:
Ice or frost on the back wall of the freezer section is usually a defrost system failure. Ice or frost covering the entire evaporator (behind a panel in the freezer) that causes the fridge section to warm up is a defrost system failure. Ice forming in the fridge compartment itself (not the freezer) with water dripping is often a clogged defrost drain. A thick layer of frost on all freezer surfaces suggests a door seal problem letting warm air in. Ice around the ice maker area is common in certain LG and Samsung models with a known design issue.
Why Does My Fridge Keep Freezing Up? The Causes
1. Defrost Heater Assembly Failure — The Most Common Cause
Modern frost-free refrigerators run an automatic defrost cycle every 8–12 hours. During this cycle, an electric heater melts any frost that has accumulated on the evaporator coils. When this heater (or the related defrost thermostat that controls it) fails, frost accumulates continuously on the evaporator. Within days to weeks, ice builds up so thick that it blocks the evaporator fan from circulating cold air. The freezer stays cold (it’s still cold near the ice), but the fridge section warms up. This is a very common Ottawa fridge repair — we stock defrost heater assemblies for LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, and Frigidaire fridges.
2. Failed Defrost Thermostat (Bimetal Thermostat)
The defrost thermostat monitors evaporator temperature during the defrost cycle. When the evaporator reaches a safe temperature, the thermostat cuts power to the defrost heater to prevent overheating. When this thermostat fails open (won’t pass current), the defrost heater never activates and frost accumulates. When it fails closed (stuck on), the heater runs too long and can damage the evaporator. Either failure mode leads to frost buildup problems.
3. Faulty Defrost Timer or Control Board
The defrost timer (on older fridges) or main control board (on newer electronic fridges) initiates the defrost cycle at the right intervals. A failed timer may stop initiating defrost cycles altogether, causing unlimited frost accumulation. On newer fridges, a control board failure can disrupt the defrost schedule. Diagnosing timer vs control board failure requires testing with specialized tools on-site.
4. Clogged Defrost Drain
When the defrost heater melts frost, the resulting water flows down a small drain tube to a drip pan at the bottom of the fridge. This drain tube can become clogged with ice, food debris, or mold. When clogged, defrost water has nowhere to go — it refreezes on the evaporator floor and eventually overflows into the fridge compartment. You’ll notice water pooling on the bottom shelf of the fridge, or ice forming on the floor of the freezer compartment. Clearing the defrost drain is part of every defrost repair we perform in Ottawa.
5. Worn or Damaged Door Gaskets
Fridge and freezer door gaskets seal out warm, humid air. When gaskets are cracked, warped, or torn, warm air constantly seeps into the freezer. This warm, moisture-laden air hits the cold evaporator and immediately freezes — forming a continuous layer of frost that never gets fully removed during defrost cycles. The freezer gradually fills with frost and ice, particularly near the door area. A simple test: put a piece of paper between the door and the seal, close the door, and try to pull the paper out. If it slides out easily, your gasket isn’t sealing properly.
6. Fridge or Freezer Temperature Set Too Cold
If the freezer is set below -18°C or the fridge is set too cold (below 0°C), ice will naturally form on items or moisture in the air. Check your temperature settings first — the fridge should be 1–4°C and the freezer should be -15 to -18°C for optimal performance. Many Ottawa homeowners inadvertently turn settings up in summer thinking “colder is better” and create frost issues.
7. Refrigerant Leak or Low Refrigerant
In rare cases, a refrigerant leak causes uneven cooling — some parts of the evaporator get extremely cold while others get warm. This uneven temperature can cause heavy frost on the cold sections of the evaporator while the unit overall doesn’t cool properly. Refrigerant issues require certified technicians with specialized equipment to diagnose and repair safely.
The Quick Manual Defrost Fix — and Why It’s Only Temporary
If your fridge is heavily iced over, you can manually defrost it by unplugging the fridge and leaving it open (with towels on the floor to catch water) for 24–48 hours. This will restore cooling temporarily. However, if the underlying defrost system component isn’t repaired, the ice will return within a few weeks. Manual defrosting is a useful short-term measure to save your groceries while you schedule a repair with B&M Canada — but it doesn’t fix the underlying problem.
